On candy-colored paper, Rhea Mack attracts a world by which all misfits are welcome. The Massachusetts-based artist lovingly renders curious characters with three heads, flowers rising from their palms, or a penchant for plump, strawberry hats.
Mack has a smooth spot for these unusual oddballs who develop organically, typically springing from her Sunday morning classes seemingly on their very own accord. “I normally begin drawing, they usually simply form of develop over a number of hours. I typically have a sure feeling or pose in thoughts, however largely I’m simply making it up as I am going,” she says.
This intuitive, accommodating perspective influences a lot of her course of, together with the choice to attract on pink paper merely “as a result of it made sense,” she says. Mack chooses different supplies equally. “The coloured pencil pinks I exploit in my drawings are very buttery and simply really feel good to attract with,” she provides.
As if rising from a favourite fairytale—making a kids’s e book is on Mack’s thoughts—the drawings twist widespread vegetation and animals like canine and daisies into surreal fantasies. Every is filled with small moments of intrigue and playful patterns like stripes and dots.
In a single work, for instance, a full human skeleton and dozens of single eyes float from a determine’s gaze, whereas a pink pup leaps overhead. One other includes a quintet certain by a rainbow gown, their bulbous, beige coifs fused collectively just like the clouds above.
