The serpent has been round for a fairly a while. It is biblical stature because the illustration of the temptation of the satan to Eve within the Backyard of Eden has usually been a part of Western thought, however the asp was a strong image in historical Egyptian tradition, representing “divine authority of the pharaohs.” The serpent has been a protector and mischievous creature, chaotic and a type of order. And that is the place we discover Montreal-born, LA-based sculpture artist David Altmejd, on the border of chaos and order, restraint and rawness, realism and fantasy. We’re within the underworld but in addition inverting the hierarchy of the world above it multi functional.

On a sunny April morning, I visited David’s now almost-empty-but-in-the-process-of-new-ideas studio in Echo Park and located that this was simply the time to get the story of the place he’s at in 2025. David digs himself into fairly a private world when he’s making a present, and he advised me he’s usually unprepared or capable of converse of his work till it leaves his studio. So right here we’re.

On this episode of The Uniborw’s Radio Juxtapoz podcast, we converse with David Altmejd about feline power, biology, bodily house, the great thing about a sculpture that’s virtually at all times in movement, and what The Serpent means to him.
