Ania Hobson presents her third solo exhibition with SETAREH titled Hen, that includes a brand new sequence of work that develop on her ongoing curiosity in spatial dynamics, figuration, and atmosphere.
In these works, Hobson turns her focus to the sky as a compositional and narrative aspect. Stylized figures are set towards vibrant blue and yellow skies, rendered in smooth, luminous tones that give the phantasm of atmospheric depth and motion past the sides of the body.
“Hen” refers back to the recurring presence of birds within the work as figures that seem each above the horizon line and inside the grounded scenes. By their placement, Hobson hyperlinks distinct areas of the pictorial area, blurring the boundaries between determine and floor, foreground and background. The sky, now not a passive backdrop, turns into an lively topic that’s mutable, expressive, and central to the emotive energy of the works.
In “Hen”, Ania Hobson continues to develop upon concepts from her earlier solo exhibition at SETAREH, “Deep-Rooted” (2023*) which offered expansive landscapes and the forest as a compositional playground. Timber had been handled as residing topics, giving the boldness that Hobson is thought for to the work and discovering how atmosphere can affect the characterization of figures. Hobson has steadily made the atmosphere a component that carries narrative, story and persona.
“Hen” is a confrontation of nature with a gaze that beholds its qualities and wonders, from its creatures to its fauna and flora. In Hobson’s works, colours are brightened and saturated to focus on nature’s inward and outward look. The impact of nature’s fixed interconnectedness is mirrored in Hobson’s capacity to bounce themes and ideas from one canvas to a different on this new exhibition. In “Hen”, Hobson infuses her works with a brand new ambiance, made radiant, generally golden and even turbulent, like an ever-changing sky.
